Mildred Hammond, a student at the Rome-Floyd Adult Education Center, and Lamar McCain, a GED graduate, currently enrolled in Marketing Management were chosen for honors in the EAGLE program on October 28, 2003. Hammond and McCain will represent Coosa Valley Technical College at the EAGLE Awards State Finals in Atlanta in January 2004. Support for the local EAGLE competition was provided by Coosa Valley Technical College and Georgia Power Company.

EAGLE (Exceptional Adult Georgians in Literacy Education) recognizes the achievement of adults who have returned to school to advance their educational skills through the Adult Literacy Program sponsored by the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education. Winners are chosen based on their ability to speak convincingly on the value of continuing education at any age. Hammond and McCain, along with instructors Nancy Simmons and Libby Monteith, will attend the statewide finals and participate in leadership training with students and teachers from across the state. Two statewide winners will be chosen based on a series of speeches and interviews with distinguished judges. Prizes include souvenir mementos and cash awards of $2004.00 each for this year’s event.

EAGLE is the first statewide program in the nation that recognizes and rewards excellence among students enrolled in adult literacy programs. Local sponsors of the statewide EAGLE Awards include: Larry’s Special Events and Catering, June Benefield Photography, Mohawk Industries, Dr. Seaborn Whatley, Briar Patch of Rome, 1902 Exchange, Dale Young, Marble Mountain Creations, Coosa Valley Technical College Campus Shop, Sam’s Club, Paula’s Jewelry, Lee’s Furniture, Ford, Gittings, and Kane, Sara Lee Bakery, Peakcock Alli, and Piggly Wiggly.
