Frequently Asked Questions

What is my email address?

Your email address is composed of your first initial, your last name, and the last 3 digits of your student ID number followed by @students.coosavalleytech.edu. For example, John Smith with student ID number 999999045 would be assigned the email address: jsmith045@students.coosavalleytech.edu. Email addresses may not contain spaces or special characters, such as " ' " and "-" so those have been removed. Suffixes (ex.- “Jr.”, “Sr.” and “III”) will be stripped off and not made part of the student email account.

What is my login for e-mail, Skydrive, Spaces, and instant messenger?

You will use your complete email address as your login for your email, Skydrive, Spaces, and instant messenger accounts. For example: jsmith045@students.coosavalleytech.edu.

What is my password?

One password will be used for email and all services. Your password will initially be set to your eight digit birth date (mmddyyyy).  For example, if your birth date is April 5, 1985, the password will be 04051985. NOTE the initial password is always eight numbers, even if it contains zeros. If you do not think your birth date is in the CVTC system correctly, please contact Student Services at 706-295-6702.

What happens when I access my email account for the first time?

The first time you access your email account the system will require you to verify your initial password, select a secret question and answer, add an alternative email address (important in case you lose your CVTC account information), enter the country and state, and list the year of your birth.  You will also be asked to indicate your desired language (select English) and time zone (select Eastern). You also may be asked to accept the service agreement and privacy statement from Microsoft.
Do not forget your secret question and answer (if you forget your password you will be required to answer your secret question). Students are responsible for managing their passwords. Coosa Valley Technical College is not responsible for managing or changing email passwords.

On the email login screen there are options to “Save my email address and password,” “Save my email address” and “Always ask for my email address and password?”  Which should I choose?

It is VERY important that when you are using any computer other than your HOME computer, you ALWAYS choose “Always ask for my email address and password.”  If you do not, the computer will remember your login and password and any person who uses that computer will be able to access your email.

Is it important to log off when finished using my email?

It is extremely important to log out of your email account when finished.  In your email account, you will see a “Log Off” option in the upper right of the screen.  Failure to log out of your account allows any person who uses that computer to access your email.  It is also good practice to close the web browser once you have logged out.

What do I do if I have lost or forgotten my password?

If you forget your email password, you can have it reset at the   login screen. Click on the “Forgot your password?” link on the login page. Follow the directions on the screen. Two options will be available: Have a new password emailed to your alternative email address or provide account information and your secret question/answer to enter a new password.  Select an option and follow the directions.

How do I change my email / messenger / skydrive / spaces password?
To help protect your personal information, change your password regularly. To change your password, follow these steps:
  1. Sign in to Account Services.
  2. On the left side of the screen choose account summary.
  3. In the middle of the screen, under Password reset information, password, select Change
  4. OR
  5. On the right of the screen, under common tasks, select change your password
  6. Enter your current password, then your new password twice.
  7. Click Save

It is very important to remember the new password. Coosa Valley Technical College staff can not retrieve your password.

Why do I have a Coosa Valley Technical College email account and what are the policies on usage?

Coosa Valley Technical College email accounts are a free service for registered students. The accounts are primarily for communication between students and faculty/staff, and are REQUIRED for all school-related email communications. Your email account and password also provides access to other Microsoft services, including MSN instant messenger, Skydrive, and Spaces.

Please note the following:

I'm logged into my email account but I need help.

Once you log into the email system, you can access extensive online help by clicking question mark in the upper right corner of the screen. Coosa Valley Technical College does not provide technical support for email, Instant Messenger, Skydrive, or Spaces; however, Microsoft does provide limited support here: https://account.live.com

What other services are available in the email system?

Once logged into your email account, you have access to your own personal planning calendar, contacts, notes and tasks.

Does my email account and password give me access to hotmail?

No. The Coosa Valley Technical College email system is running Microsoft Exchange.

What are Skydrive and Spaces?

Skydrive is an online personal storage space for files and documents. Files can be shared and made public to others over the internet. With Spaces you can create your own blog and publish photographs. Copyrighted material should never be uploaded or shared.

When are email accounts created for new students?

Email accounts are created for new students approximately two days after the official week of registration, again after late registration, and again approximately seven days after each quarter begins. Students can login to Banner Web and check to see if their accounts have been created.
